5 ways to sleep well when travelling




It can be hard to get a decent night’s rest while travelling. Not only can it be hard to get sleep because of differences in time zones, but it can also be hard to sleep somewhere that isn’t your normal bed. And although it can be difficult to get some sleep while you are traveling, there are a few things that you can do to make it easier to get the rest that you need after a long day of sightseeing and doing different activities.



1. Buy a good pillow


In order to have a good sleep anywhere you go, you need to have a good pillow. If you’re travelling by plane and you’re going to be on a flight for a long time, it is a good idea to take a pillow with you so that you can try to sleep while you are in transit. A lot of people like to take a travel pillow that sits around your neck when flying on a plane, which is great for travelling because they are lightweight and easy to transport.


However, if you are planning on staying somewhere for more than a few nights, you should bring a good pillow with you so that you get a good night’s rest.



2. Try aromatherapy


If you struggle to get a good night’s rest when you are away from home, you should consider trying aromatherapy to help you fall asleep. Lavender oil is great for helping you get to sleep and it has been proven to improve your quality of sleep and alleviate mild insomnia symptoms. It is also a smell that makes people feel calm and cosy, which is just what you need when you are far away from home. Another natural substance that can help you to sleep well each night is valerian. Valerian is known to have sedative qualities which can help you to feel more relaxed and get to sleep each night. Valerian is also known to help you get a good quality of sleep and fall asleep faster each night, so it is perfect for helping you sleep when you are on holidays.


Both of these oils can be taken with you while you are away and won’t take up a lot of space in your luggage, so they are perfect for travelling with.



3. Sleep strategically


If you are going on a trip to another country, you need to start sleeping strategically before you leave to fall in with the local sleep schedule. Different places around the world have different time zones, so you should try to go to sleep at the same time you would in your new time zone in order to feel rested when you are away. Nobody wants to feel jetlagged when they are on holidays, so adjusting your bedtime before you go away can stop this from happening while you are travelling. If you are going on a trip for less than 3 days, you probably don’t need to worry about adjusting your sleep schedule, but if you plan on holidaying for longer than that, you need to start sleeping strategically.



4. Try sleeping aids


Sometimes, it can be harder than you anticipated to sleep well while you are away, so you may need a bit of help from some aids. Some people need sleeping pills or sedatives to get to sleep when they are not at home, whereas others may need special devices to help them get a good night’s rest. If you are someone who regularly has problems while sleeping, and you have a condition like sleep apnea, you should consider taking some sleeping aids with you on holidays so that you can sleep better. Most people forget to take their CPAP mask and machine away with them when they go on a trip, but your CPAP machine could be just what you need to sleep well when you are away from home. 5. Limit your alcohol intake


It is not uncommon to think that having a drink before bed can help you get to sleep. However, if you want to get a really good night’s rest, you may need to give up your regular nightcap while you are travelling. Having alcohol before you got to bed can really impact your quality of sleep because it can reduce the amount of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep that you get each night which is essential for restoring your body after a long day. A few drinks every now and then won’t affect you too much, but if you have trouble sleeping when you are on holidays, you may want to limit your alcohol intake for a few days so that you get some sleep.


Sleeping while you are on holidays is very difficult for most of us because you have certain rituals and routines that you follow before you go to bed in your own home. So in order to sleep better when you are away, you need to make your home away from home feel comfortable for you. Preparing yourself for sleep before you travel is a great way to feel comfortable while you are away and ensure that you will get a good night’s rest no matter where you are in the world.
